Carole Jean Groening, age 89, of Spring Lake, passed away on Monday, July 22, 2024, at Trinity Health Muskegon Hospital. She was born on November 28, 1934, in Detroit, MI, to the late Henry and Modesta (VanDyke) Lammerts. Carole married Wilferd Groening on June 14, 1958, in Detroit, MI. He preceded her in death on January 20, 2024, after 65 years of marriage.
Carole graduated from Mackenzie High School and then received her Registered Nurse certification. She worked as a lighthouse keeper in Ludington for some time and spent her nursing career working for Detroit Children’s Hospital until her retirement.
Carole was an avid reader who loved traveling and had been to all 50 states and every Continent except South America, Asia, and Antarctica. She loved spending time in nature going camping and hiking, and her green thumb allowed her to grow beautiful orchids. Carole was especially known for being a kind soul who loved to be around and help others.
Carole is lovingly remembered and missed by her daughter, Gail (John) Pawlak of Spring Lake; her son, David (Carol) Groening of Fairfax, VT; five grandchildren: John (Erin) Pawlak, Daniel (Cassie) Pawlak, Sarah (Justin) Patterman, Sandra (Ben) Ashline, and Michael Groening; and four great-grandchildren: Jack and Noah Patterman, Gideon and Elyse Pawlak.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law, Joanne and Lou Fiedler.
Private services will be held.
