Brian Martin Payne, age 58, passed away on November 22, 2023, at his home in Suffolk, Virginia. He was born on May 1, 1965, in Grand Haven, Michigan.
After graduating from Grand Haven High School in 1983, Brian enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly and honorably served his country for 20 years. He spent the first 12 years of his service as a Search and Rescue Aircrew Swimmer. Brian received the Navy Commendation Medal, Multiple Navy Achievement Medals, and earned the right to wear gold rank and service insignia for honorable service. He also received the Sikorsky Helicopter Rescue Award for "Skill and Courage” while participating in a lifesaving mission with a Sikorsky H-3 Helicopter.
Brian went on to become a subject matter expert on the F-14 Tomcat and F/A 18 Hornet aircraft. During his years of service, Brian became a mentor to many, who became cherished friends. After his retirement from the US Navy, he continued his career as a Naval Aviation Maintenance Mechanic, working on F-14 Tomcat and F/A-18 Hornet Aircraft.
Brian spent many of his years as a volunteer with the Virginia Beach's Boy Scouts of America Troop 493, as a leader to his own son and many other young men. He enjoyed spending his free time with his family, tinkering in his garage, and doting on his dogs.
Brian is survived by his wife of 35 years, Alicia L. Payne (Bell); his daughter, Jessica A. (David) Powell; his son, Theodore J. (Shannon) Payne; three grandchildren: Elizabeth, Rufus, and Lillian; his brothers: Robert "Terry" Payne, Michael R. (Cheryl) Payne, Mark A. Payne, and Dennis M. (Linda) Payne; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert M. Payne; and his mother, Willa Dean (Ray) Payne.
The Graveside Service for Brian will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at Grand Haven Township Historic Cemetery with Pastor Doug Bytwerk officiating. Full Military Honors will be provided by the American Legion, Charles A. Conklin Post 28.
