Bernice Elizabeth Costello, age 89, of Grand Haven, passed away on Saturday, October 11, 2025, in Spring Lake, MI, surrounded by her children. She was born on December 18, 1935, in Chicago, IL, to the late Anton and Anna (Somenek) Macko.
Bernice and her family moved to Grand Haven in 1945, and she graduated from Grand Haven High School in 1953. Bernice graduated from Michigan State University in 1957 where she received her Bachelor of Science degree. She married Leonard Costello on June 20, 1964, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Grand Haven. He preceded her in death on September 7, 1972.
Bernice was a Credit Manager for most of her career, starting at Gardner Denver in Grand Haven and then working for Brunswick and Textron, where she eventually retired from in 1988. Upon her retirement, Bernice had a home in Florida for a short period of time, as she wanted to return to her beloved Grand Haven.
Bernice was a devout Catholic for her entire life and was a longtime member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. She was an avid Michigan State fan and witnessed a national championship during her time in East Lansing. Bernice never missed a chance to talk about her Spartans. She loved Disney World and enjoyed taking several trips there, first with her children and then with her grandchildren.
Bernice also enjoyed gardening and had passion for nature, especially feeding her birds. She was an animal lover and had several beloved pets over the years. Most importantly, her family was everything to her.
Bernice's life was a testament to resilience, kindness, and courage. Whether cheering on her team, or sharing stories with her family, she made every moment count. Her warmth, wisdom, sharp wit and ability to "tell you what she thinks" will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Bernice is survived by her three loving children: Cerise (Steve) Semrinec, Tim (Kim) Costello, and Tracy (Keith) Colodny; five grandchildren: Andrew (Alida) Semrinec, Christopher (Brittany Beeler) Semrinec, Jack (Rylee) Costello, Joe Costello, and Savanah Fry; as well as two great granddaughters, Lucille and Amelia Semrinec.
