Barbara (Haaksma) Hoekzema

Barbara Hoekzema (Haaksma) of Fort Myers, FL and Spring Lake, MI passed away at Hope Hospice in Bonita Springs, FL on Thursday, February 11, 2021, into the arms of her Heavenly Father. Barbara was born in Grand Rapids, MI and attended Grand Rapids Christian High where she met her true love and best friend, James “Jim” Hoekzema at the age of 15, and whom she later married.

She had a joyous life that included boating, traveling, playing tennis, volunteering, attending church, and spending time with friends and family. Barbara was an incredibly selfless person always putting the happiness of others first. She laughed easily, loved completely, and was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend that will be greatly missed.

Barbara was blessed with an amazing husband of 54 years, Jim (lovingly called Poppy); two children, Heidi and David; as well as her granddaughter, Sarah Hoekzema. She also loved and adored her son-in-law, Rick Rupp; and daughter-in-law, Jane Hoekzema (Duba). She also loved and was very close with numerous extended family members belonging to both the Hoekzema and Haaksma families. She was preceded in death by her father, Marshall Haaksma; mother, Henrietta Haaksma; and brother, Curt (Helen) Haaksma.

A Celebration of Life will be held later this year in Michigan, date to be announced. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Barbara's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the American Diabetes Association.
