Arlene Joyce Assink, age 87, of Grand Haven, passed away on Monday, February 17, 2025, at home. She was born on July 20, 1937, in Holland, MI, to the late John and Alice (Roels) Raterink. Arlene married the love of her life, Harold Assink, on January 27, 1962, in Holland, MI.
Arlene grew up in Holland and graduated from Holland Christian High School. She went on to attend Butterworth Nursing school and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. Arlene started her career at a doctor's office in Holland and then spent over 25 years serving our community at North Ottawa Community Hospital, especially enjoying her time in the nursery.
Arlene and Harold were past members of Hope Reformed Church, and later, became members of Second Reformed Church. She enjoyed traveling, camping, and being with family. Arlene also loved sewing, often donating these items to Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital. She worked at election polls and enjoyed volunteering at International Aid and for Wednesday night dinners at Second Reformed Church. Arlene had a huge heart for her Lord, Jesus Christ, for her family, and for others and she will be missed by many whose lives she touched.
Arlene will be remembered and missed by her husband of 63 years, Harold; and her children: Warren Jay (Stella) Assink, Beverly Ann Assink, and Mary (Mitch) Berkenpas; five grandchildren: Joyce and Joshua Assink, and Jacob, Sarah, and Rachel Berkenpas; sister, Gloria (John) Fritz; siblings-in-law: Leon (Joann) Assink, Roger (Anne) Assink, Bernice (Larry) Palma, and Melvin (Bev) Assink; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and grandson, Mitchell Berkenpas, Jr.
Arlene's family would like to thank everyone who helped care for Arlene in her last years: Pearl, Lisa, Ciara, Kaley, Jamie, Julie, Cynthia, Veronica, and Rebecca; and, from Corewell Health Hospice, Emily and Wendy. We are so thankful for the many longtime friends and families who have supported and cared for Arlene and our family.
