Alice Louise Akin, age 95 of Grand Haven, passed away on Monday, November 15, 2021 at Grand Pines Assisted Living. She was born on January 7, 1926, in St. Louis, Missouri, to the late Frank and Altha (Straube) Duncan. Alice married Robert H. Akin on December 26, 1975 in Grand Haven, MI. He preceded her in death on September 27, 2014.
Alice lived in Grand Haven for most of her life. She graduated from Kalamazoo College and worked as a research scientist for Upjohn (Pfizer) in Kalamazoo and Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, before moving to the Grand Haven area. She received her Master’s Degree in Education from Grand Valley State College, where she was also a lab instructor. She was also a chemistry and biology teacher at Grand Haven High School for over 20 years until her retirement.
Alice was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church of Grand Haven. She enjoyed golfing at the Spring Lake Country Club, skiing, tennis, classical music, and travel. She also loved walking her beloved golden retrievers in Duncan Woods with friends and family.
Alice is lovingly remembered and missed by her two daughters, Marta (Tom) Northam and Jennifer (Ken) Reibel; her step-son, Matthew Akin; four grandchildren, Megan (Randy) Deming, Casey (Karen) Ross, Christopher and Natalie Reibel; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Frank “Al” Duncan.
The Memorial Service for Alice will take place at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 26, 2022 at First Presbyterian Church of Grand Haven. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Lake Forest Cemetery.
