Albert Jay Berkompas, age 82, of Grand Haven, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, September 28, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 8, 1942, at Grand Haven Municipal Hospital in Grand Haven, MI, to the late Bruce and Doris (Ludlow) Berkompas. Al married his beloved wife, Brenda Lois Harden, on September 17, 1960.
Al graduated from Grand Haven High School and enjoyed a fulfilling career as a heavy equipment operator. He began his career with A. Reenders and Sons which later led into a position with S&M Gravel from 1985-2006. He was a member of Grand Haven Eagles Aerie #925 and was a hard worker by both day and night. Al spent several decades plowing snow around the Tri-Cities area working with Bill Tysman snow removal.
Al was a lifetime member of Hope Church and enjoyed going to the car races at Thunderbird and Berlin Raceways. Al also enjoyed watching NASCAR with his family and friends, never missing a Sunday race. He and Brenda raised sled dogs in their younger years, and later, had hobbies of wood-working and growing blueberries. Al enjoyed spending time at Lincoln Lake Campground where he was known for winning the annual Christmas decorating contests. After retiring from the snowplowing business, Al and Brenda enjoyed traveling to Naples Florida in the winter.
One of his greatest joys came from spending time with his wife, daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He will be dearly missed, but fondly remembered for his love, wisdom, and the countless memories he created, and his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
Al is survived by his wife of 64 years, Brenda Berkompas; and their three daughters: Becky Tallman of Manistee, MI, Deb (Steve) Reenders of Robinson Township, MI, and Christi (Ken) Bernia of Robinson Township, MI; eight grandchildren: Chad (Kelly) Reenders, Corey (Carly) Tallman, Nathan (Megan) Reenders, Katelynn Reenders (Andy), Savannah Tallman (Cole), Brecken Bernia (Amy), Kennedi Bernia (P.J.), and Jerica (Braxton) Wert; as well as 10 great- grandchildren, and one on the way.
