Robert Allen Olthof, age 58 of Spring Lake, passed away on Friday, July 20, 2018 at Heartwood Lodge after a long and painful fight with cancer. He was born on March 25, 1960 to the late Jack and Mary Lou Olthof Sr. in Grand Haven.
Bob worked for the family business for 40 years as a machinist at North Shore Machine in Ferrysburg, and was a Volunteer Firefighter for over 20 years at the Jack Olthof Sr. Fire Station, also in Ferrysburg. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion, Post 28, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 925, both of Grand Haven. Up until he contracted cancer, he enjoyed an occasional beer with friends, installing sprinkler systems, mowing lawns, and just being outdoors. He loved playing Keno, and was the luckiest guy around. He had a heart of gold and would try to help anybody out.
Bob is survived by his sister, Wendy Carter of Muskegon; brothers, Jack (Carol) Olthof Jr. and Mike (Annel) Olthof Sr., all of Ferrysburg; three nieces, Bethaney (Dave) Daniels of Norton Shores, Lynn and Kelly Olthof of Ferrysburg ; a nephew, Mike Olthof Jr. of Ferrysburg; and close friends, Glenn (Kathy) Kade. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Luanne Olthof of Grand Haven.
Per Bob’s wishes, cremation has taken place. He wanted his health to remain private up until his passing, and the family would like to send heartfelt apologies to any friends who were not aware of Bob’s condition. His wish in the last few weeks was to see his Dad up in Heaven, and they are now together again. The family would like to give a special Thank You to Glenn and Kathy Kade, who took Bob to all his doctor appointments, picked up his prescriptions, and spent time with him the last 18 months, and to Harbor Hospice for caring for Bob.
A Celebration of Life for Bob will be on Saturday, September 22, 2018 from 7 to 11 PM at the Grand Haven Elks Lodge.
Memorial contributions may be made to Harbor Hospice.
