Robert Spoelma, age 97 of Grand Haven, went to his Heavenly Home with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 2, 2019. He fought the good fight and finished his race. He died of old age.
Bob was born May 21, 1921 in Grand Haven to the late Lubert Herman and Dora (Stap) Spoelma. Bob lived his entire life enjoying the Grand Haven landscape. He was a World War II Army Veteran, serving 3 1/2 years in England. He then married Clara DeVries on September 24, 1948. She preceded him in death in September, 2012 after 63 years of marriage.
He was employed at Bastian Blessing for approximately 37 years. He also served as Treasurer of the Bastian Blessing Employees Credit Union and as Treasurer of Grand Haven Christian School. After retiring from Bastian Blessing, he volunteered at the Senior Citizen Center helping seniors with their taxes and working at the voter polling stations. He was a lifelong member of First Christian Reformed Church serving as elder, deacon, and treasurer.
Bob loved to travel the U. S. and enjoyed group bus travels sightseeing with Clara by his side. He treasured his family and enjoyed playing a part in his grandchildren’s lives. He was often found fighting the squirrels in his backyard, wandering through county parks and trails, walking the Grand Haven Boardwalk, or soaking up the view sitting along the channel. He was an avid sports fan. Bob was also a master word search detective in his later years.
Bob is survived by his children; daughter, Debra (Robert) Graham of Belmont, MI; sons, James (Carol) Spoelma of Holt, MI, Ross (Cheri) Spoelma of Newago, MI, and Todd (Connie) Spoelma of Jenison, MI. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Celia Williams and Harriet Westerhouse.
The Funeral Service will be at 12:00 pm on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at Klaassen Family Funeral Home with Pastor Cory Nederveld officiating. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am, one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Lake Forest Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be given to Grand Haven Christian School.
