Richard (Rich) C. VanDoorne, age 84 of Grand Haven, passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at Metro Health Hospital, Grand Rapids. He was born on March 28, 1935 in Grand Haven to the late Cornelius and Frances (Klouw) VanDoorne. Rich married Charlene Bethke on March 10, 1967 in Grand Haven.
After attending Grand Haven High School, Rich proudly served his country in the US Army from 1955 to 1963. He attended First Presbyterian Church, and was a member of the American Legion, Charles A. Conklin Post 28 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 925. Rich worked as a service technician for Michigan Gas Utilities for 40 years, and was a mate on the Charter Boat, “Thunder Duck” for 28 years. He loved being on the water and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Rich will be remembered and missed by his loving wife of 52 years, Charlene; children, Ronald (Denice) VanDoorne of Dickinson, ND, Randall (Pam) VanDoorne of Grand Haven, Roger VanDoorne of Camas, WA, Jeffrey Bewalda of Grand Haven; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Ruth (Larry) Horton and Carol (Bruce) Kiebach all of Grand Haven; and brother, James VanDoorne of Rockford. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Connie Zimonick; and sister-in-law, Kathy VanDoorne.
The Memorial Service for Rich will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 13, 2019 at Grand Haven Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Ron Heiler officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, at the church, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Full Military Rites will be performed by the American Legion, Charles A. Conklin Post 28. Interment will be at Lake Forest Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to the American Legion, Charles A. Conklin Post 28.
