Phyllis Amelia Harris, age 84, of Nunica, MI, passed away on Monday, August 5, 2019, at a local care facility. She was born December 8, 1934, in Comins, MI, to the late Sheridan and Verna (Gusler) Rhoads. Phyllis married Wallace (Wally) Harris on February 1, 1958.
Phyllis was employed as a physical education teacher at Fruitport High School and Kenowa Hills Middle School. She was an excellent cook and also enjoyed sewing, traveling, reading, and gardening. Phyllis had an adventurous nature which inspired her to take up white-water rafting, down-hill skiing, and biking trips in Vermont, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, England, Ireland, and New Zealand. She was an active member of the 70-Plus Ski Club and the Tri-cities YMCA, where she and husband, Wally, have been members of the Body Basics Class for over 30 years. Phyllis ran in local 5K races in Spring Lake and Grand Haven including the Coast Guard race, always getting a gold medal in her age group.
Phyllis was full of life and will be lovingly remembered and missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her husband, Wally; son, Tod (Barbara) Harris of Eugene, OR; daughter, Lara (Gary) David of Stow, MA; grandchildren: Claire, Alex, Amelia, Hailey, and Cailin; sister, Ruby (Bob) Jenner of Fairview, MI; and brothers, Maurice of Oscoda, MI, Dean (Bonnie) of Traverse City, MI, Milton (Rebecca) of Las Vegas, NV, Ross (Joanie) of Escanaba, MI, and Sheridan of Elk Rapids, MI. Phyllis was preceded in death by her daughter, Amy Harris.
The Memorial Service will be at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, August 16, 2019 at Klaassen Family Funeral Home with Pastor Doug Bytwerk officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Memorial Contributions may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association-Greater Michigan Chapter.
