Nancy L. (Witzel) Smith

Nancy L. Smith, age 84 of Grand Haven, formerly of The Villages, FL passed away Friday, January 11, 2019. Nancy was born March 13, 1934 to Melvin and Mabel (VanVoorst) Witzel in Grand Rapids, MI. She married Richard Smith on January 2, 1957. He preceded her in death on August 12, 2015. Together they raised five children; Cindy (Rick) Lee, Steve Smith, Dick (Kathy) Smith, Beth (Randy) Ferris and Sally (Chuck) Nugent.

Once her children were of school age, Nancy went back to school and received her Bachelor of Science from Saginaw Valley State University and her Master’s in Education from Central Michigan University; graduating summa cum laude from both universities. Nancy retired from Bridgeport-Spaulding Schools after 30 years of teaching pre-school. She was an avid reader, enjoyed traveling, gardening, playing golf and being surrounded by family.

Nancy leaves behind a legacy for the love of family and the importance of being kind and respectful to others. She modeled true love for her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The caregivers in the Courtyard at Grand Pines appreciated her for her quick wit and sense of humor. Nancy left us years ago to Vascular Dementia, today she left us until we meet again. There is no joy in watching a loved one decline mentally; joy is found in the memories. The family would like to thank the many caregivers who provided such great care and love over the years including Comfort Keepers, Grand Pines Assisted Living and Hospice of North Ottawa Community.

Nancy will be lovingly remembered by her children; grandchildren; Katie (John), Kristin, Samantha, Trevor, Sydney, Kaurie (Chandler), Brenton, Will (Courtney), Lauren (Kevin), Lauren Ann (Grant), Patrick, Tim (Allie), Mark, Scott; great-grandchildren, Grace, Ben, Max, Mia, Lane, Sophie and Nash; sisters, Patricia Shupe, Sally Kok; brother-in-law, Darrell (Betty) Smith; sister-in-law, Pat (Mark) Day; several nieces, nephews, and friends.

A Visitation for Nancy will be Sunday, January 13, 2019 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 pm at Klaassen Family Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be given to Hospice of North Ottawa Community or Alzheimer’s Association, Michigan Chapter.
