Joseph G. Boomgaard, age 81, of Grand Haven passed away January 30, 2019 with loving family at his side. He was born December 16, 1937 in Grand Haven to the late James & Mildred (Smith) Boomgaard. Joe married the former Bette J. Mulder on October 24, 1981 in Spring Lake.
He owned and operated GAARD, Inc. for 15 years before his retirement. Prior to that, he owned Tri-City Machine and was also employed for 18 years at Gardner-Denver Co. Joe was a life member of the Elks Lodge, where he served as past-exalted ruler; a member of North Ottawa Rod & Gun Club, member of the ATRA Airedale Terrier Rescue Association, and former member of the Lions Club. He loved to hunt, fish, and go up North to relax with his family and friends. Joe also loved coaching baseball and basketball for the little league, as well as playing softball in his younger years. Most of all, he loved being with his family and having coffee with his buddies at Meijer.
Joe is survived by his loving family; wife, Bette; children: JoAnn (Glen) Guthrie, Darcy (Paul) Bowen, Christi (Phil) Gazella, & David (Kristi) Boomgaard; 8 grandchildren, Andrew & Emily Bowen, Lauren, Allison & Daniel Gazella and Ericka, and Chloe & Lily Boomgaard. Also surviving are 2 sisters, Mildred De Broux and Cathy Newell; brother, Bill (Sharon) Boomgaard; and sister-in-law, Helen Boomgaard. He was preceded in death by his sister, Helen Ball; and 4 brothers: Robert, James, Peter and Phil Boomgaard.
The Service for Joe will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, February 9, 2019 at Klaassen Family Funeral Home with his son, Rev. David Boomgaard officiating. Interment at Lake Forest Cemetery. Friends may meet the family 5:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, February 8, 2019 and one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be given to Hospice of North Ottawa Community or the Harbor Humane Society.
