John "Pops" Schmidt Obituary

John Albert Schmidt, age 69 of Muskegon, passed away Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at Mercy Hospital in Muskegon. He was born on February 7, 1949 in Grand Haven to the late Fred C. and Lillian H. (King) Schmidt.

John was employed as a Drafter by Engineering Dimensions, Sealed Power, and Frederick Design. He was a big fan of the New York Yankees and enjoyed farming and bowling. He was past President of Grand Haven’s Bowling Association, and current Association Manager of West Michigan United States Bowling Congress of Muskegon where all his bowling buddies knew him as “Pops.” To everyone who knew him, John will be remembered as a very charismatic friend who was fun-loving and full of life.

John will be lovingly remembered and missed by his daughter, Liz (Mike) Novakoski of Grand Rapids; sons, Jeremy (Danielle) Schmidt of Muskegon and Justin (Megan) Schmidt of Grand Haven; step-sons, Roy (Rochelle) Walsh and Joe (Beth) Walsh; 15 grandchildren; sister, Lillian “Tootie” Marcum; and brothers, Don (Maxine) Schmidt and Clarence (Lois) Schmidt; and sweetie, Jill Walsh. He was preceded in death by his parents; and three older brothers, Richard, Ed, and Frederick Schmidt.

The Memorial Service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 7, 2019 at Klaassen Family Funeral Home with Pastor Bill Russell officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 6th also at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the West Michigan United States Bowling Congress.
