Dr. Martin Martinus

Dr. Martin Martinus, age 98, of West Olive, went to be with his Savior and friend, Jesus, on Wednesday, January 17, 2018, at Grand Pines Assisted Living Center.  He was born to the late William and Anna (Dykstra) Martinus on August 30, 1919, in Holland, Michigan. Martin married Irene VanAppledorn on May 29, 1943; she preceded him in death on May 31, 2012. 

Martin graduated from Holland Christian High School, Calvin College, and the University of Michigan Medical School. He practiced as a general surgeon at Butterworth Hospital and was the Medical Director at Kent Community Hospital.  He also served on the boards of Bethany Christian Services and Seymour Christian School.  

Martin was a member of Second Christian Reformed Church in Grand Haven, and a past deacon and elder at LaGrave Avenue Christian Reformed Church in Grand Rapids. He was a wonderful dad, grandfather, and "Bops" to his great-grandchildren. He will be missed. We look forward to being with him again. God is good.  

Martin is survived by his loving children:  M. James (Harriet) Martinus of Jenison, Mary (Curt) DeJongh of Grand Haven, and William (Shirley) Martinus of West Olive, 11 grandchildren:  Jackie (Eric) Boss, Karen (Juanito) Moore, Jill (Todd) Pederson, Rachelle Sal, Richard (Ashley) Martinus, James (Alisha) Martinus, Jen (Cal) Keuning, Betsy (Pastor Chris) DeGraaf, Fenna Martinus, Anna (Mike) Peters, and Maarten (Sara) Martinus; 26 great-grandchildren; In-Laws, Joyce Martinus and Angie (Herman) VanHamersveld; and many nieces and nephews.  He was also preceded in death by his granddaughter, Allison DeJongh, in 2011.

The service for Martin will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2018, at Second Christian Reformed Church in Grand Haven with Pastors Christopher DeGraaf and Laura de Jong officiating.  Interment will be at Pilgrim Home Cemetery in Holland. Family will greet friends and relatives one hour prior to and after the service at the luncheon. Full Military Rites will be conducted by the V.F.W. Sergeant Alvin Jonker Post #2326.
