Dr. Lawrence A. Jullie, age 97, of Grand Haven, passed away on Sunday, June 17, 2018, at Heartwood Lodge. He was born on May 21, 1921 to the late Louis and Anna (Nyerges) Jullie in Chicago, Illinois. Doc served in the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant from 1942 to 1945, and was awarded numerous medals and ribbons including: the Bronze Star, Victory Medal, Overseas Service Bars, Good Conduct Medal, Service Stripe, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon. In 2016, as a WWII survivor, Doc was given the great honor to travel on the Mid-Michigan Honor Flight to Washington D.C. with other veterans to visit those memorials dedicated to honor the service and sacrifices of themselves and their friends.
After his service in the military, Doc attended Northern Illinois College of Optometry and became an Optometrist. He owned and operated Lawrence A. Jullie Optometry for 39 years before retiring in 1986. He married Dorothy VanderZalm on February 27, 1960 in Grand Haven, where they started their family. Doc was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Charter member and past President of the Grand Haven Lions Club, former member of the Spring Lake Country Club, and also held memberships at the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post # 28, V.F.W Sergeant Alvin Jonker Post # 2326 and the Grand Haven Elks Lodge in Grand Haven. He was an avid outdoorsman, and loved to hunt, fish, and golf.
Doc is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy; two sons, Jeffrey (Kelli) Jullie of Grand Haven, and Mark (Rob) Jullie of Chicago; and four grandchildren, Dr. Alissa (Wayne) Enzenberger, Jamie, Anna, and Brittany Jullie. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Louis Jullie and George Jullie; and sister, Helen Schwarz.
The Funeral Service for Doc will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, June 22, 2018 at Klaassen Family Funeral Home, with Deacon Lance Walters officiating. Interment will be at Lake Forest Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm at the funeral home. Full military honors will be provided by the V.F.W. Sergeant Alvin Jonker Post # 2326.
