Mrs. Arlene Ruth (VanderRoest) Apol, age 93 of Grand Haven, formerly of Lansing and Kalamazoo, passed away at home on August 10, 2019. Arlene was born May 26, 1926 in Kalamazoo to the late John and Angie (Razenberg) VanderRoest.
She graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1944 and the attended Western Michigan University. Arlene was employed with the City of Kalamazoo for 30 years from 1946 through 1976, the last 10 years as City Clerk. After her retirement, she volunteered at Ingham Medical Hospital, Lansing and North Ottawa Community Hospital, Grand Haven. She was also active in Friendship Ministries in Lansing and Grand Haven.
She was a member of Second Christian Reformed Church, Grand Haven and former member of River Terrace Church, East Lansing, MI and Third Christian Reformed Church of Kalamazoo. On January 29, 1977, she married Bernard Apol who preceded her in death on February 2, 2004.
Surviving are four children; Joel (Mary) Apol of Hamburg, N.J., David Apol (Catherine Novelli) of Dunn Loring, VA., Ruth (Randy) Zoodsma of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Jane (Roy) Okma of Wayne, N.J.; 8 grandchildren, Matthew (Melanee) Apol, Katerina Apol, Daniel Apol, Crystal Zoodsma, Josiah Zoodsma, Anna Zoodsma, Peter Okma, MJ Okma, sister-in-law, Lillian vandenBurg of Grand Haven; and several nieces and nephews. Arlene was preceded in death by 4 sisters and 4 brother-in-laws: Johanna (Bernard) Molhoek, Gertrude (Marvin) Bierenga, Jeanette (Carl) Sylvester, Angeline (Robert) McKinley.
The Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 16, 2019 at Second Christian Reformed Church with Pastor Laura deJong officiating. Interment will be in Delta Township Cemetery in Lansing, MI at 3:00 p.m. Friends are invited to meet the family 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. at the church on Friday. Memorial contributions may be given to World Renew.
