Leslie William Martin, age 93 of Grand Haven passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at Robbinswood Assisted Living. Les was born May 3, 1923 to the late Elon and Blanche (Suida) Martin in Muskegon. He graduated from Muskegon High School and then went on to proudly serve his country as a Staff Sgt. in the Army Air Corp during WW II. Les married Ruth Kops on July 12, 1947 in Muskegon. In 1965, Les and Ruth moved to Grand Haven. Ruth passed away on April 4, 2011. He worked for Teledyne/Continental for 43 years. Les was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the V.F.W. Post #3195. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed gardening, shopping and going to estate sales. Les had a big heart and helped support his entire family. He is survived by his daughters, Gail (Vaughn) Umphrey of West Olive, Carla (Larry) Herlein of Spring Lake; son, Gary (Pamela) Martin of Mansfield, OH; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Shirley (Edward) Radecki, Barbara (Loyal) Gedmin both of Muskegon; sisters-in-law, Peggy and Gladys Martin both of Muskegon. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Beatrice Wertch, Phyllis Martin, Theora Stellini and brothers, Richard and Jack Martin. The Mass of Christian burial for Les will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, May 16, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. Father David Gross officiating. Full Military Rites will be provided by the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post #28 and the V.F.W. Sergeant Alvin Jonker Post #2326. Interment will be in Grand Haven Township Lakeshore Cemetery. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church.
