John Wiersma, age 45 of Spring Lake, passed away Thursday, February 15, 2018 at Heartwood Lodge in Spring Lake Township. He was born June 8, 1972 to John Kaptein and Nancy (Terpstra) Wiersma in Grand Rapids. After his father passed away John was lovingly raised by his second father, Del Wiersma. He graduated from Spring Lake High School. John was employed at DePatie Fluid/Power Company. He married Marie “Marti” Poel on May 27, 2010 in Grand Haven. John had a gift of making everyone laugh and he passed his wit along to his children. He loved traveling to the Upper Peninsula and camping. John was an avid fan of the Georgia Bulldogs College football, Detroit Tigers and hockey. He also enjoyed geocaching . John is survived by his wife, Marti; son, Tyler; daughter, Grace; sisters, Kathy Lampen, Kim (Ben) Searle, Cherie (Dan) Clark, Shelly (Wade) Slater; brothers, Kip Wiersma, Kirk (Janet) Wiersma, Kevin (Diane) Wiersma, Kent (Joan) Wiersma. He is also survived by brothers and sisters-in-law, Andy Maddox, Barb (Dan) Hoekema, Marilyn Milkamp, Bill (Kathy) Poel, Linda (Scott) Wesseldyke, and Randy (Lisa) Poel; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Del & Nancy Wiersma; biological father, John Kaptein; and sister-in-law, Chris Maddox. The Celebration of Life for John will be 3:30 pm on Monday, February 19, at Harvest Bible-Spring Lake Campus with Pastor Craig Gurr officiating. Relatives and friends may meet the family from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm on Sunday, February 18, 2018 at Klaassen Family Funeral Home. Memorials contributions may be made to the People Center in Spring Lake.
