Joel Allen Schmitt

Joel Allen Schmitt, age 70 of Grand Haven passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at home. Joel was born October 15, 1945 to Lawrence and Ruth (Vanderzwaag) Schmitt in Coldwater, MI.  Joel married Shirley Vrablic on August 28, 1965 in Spring Lake. He was a graduate of Grand Haven High School and went on to get his associates degree at Muskegon Business College. Joel worked as a finance director for the City of Grand Haven for 19 years and 30 years at My-Con Inc.. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, hunting, fishing and traveling. Joel and Shirley spent the winter months in Nevada. His greatest joy came from spending time with his family and granddaughters. Joel is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Shirley; daughter, Susan Spitsberg of Plainwell, MI; son, Ron (Tonya) Schmitt of Cocoa, FL; granddaughters, Paige, Brooke, Katelyn Spitsberg; mother, Ruth; brothers, Larry Schmitt, Stewart (Sandy) Schmitt both of Grand Haven; very special brother-in-law, James Vrablic of Grand Haven; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence and sister, Kristen Laug.  A memorial service for Joel will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at Klaassen Family Funeral Home with Pastor Jeff Elzinga officiating. Relatives and friends may meet the family from 5 – 8 pm on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at Klaassen Family Funeral Home.
