George L. Vollmer, age 77 of Robinson Township passed away Friday, August 19, 2016 at Mercy Hospital in Muskegon. The joy and laughter of George Leroy Vollmer’s life was silenced by cancer. He was born April 7, 1939 to Ludwig and Ruth (Johnson) Vollmer. Ruth died when George was only two years old. They will be reunited after 75 years. George was a resident of Robinson Township all his life. He graduated from Grand Haven High School class of 1958 where he played baseball during his high school years. George loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting deer and sharing fish and venison with friends and family. His passion was vegetable gardening. George planted a huge garden this spring even after his cancer diagnosis in March. George loved to share his produce with everyone. George also served his country proudly in the U.S. Army from 1962-1964 and the Army Reserve from 1964-1966. George was employed by Stuart Vollmer Construction as a carpenter and built his own home on Johnson Street and resided in it for 49 years. He also had been employed in the Christmas tree business for his father, and was a raw fur dealer as well. Several times George risked his life saving fishermen who fell through the ice on Stearns Bayou and Muskegon Lake. In 1982, he won first place in the 6th Annual Bass Classic. A pastime on winter days was carving fish decoys. We will all miss his story telling. To cherish his memory, George leaves a loving, faithful wife and helpmate of 53 years, Dina Lee and a daughter, Lora Lee Vollmer, and her fiancé George Talia of Milford. He is also survived by brothers, Stuart Vollmer of Spring Lake, Raymond (Nancy) Vollmer of Grand Haven; sisters, Irene (Tony) Maas, Ruth (Paul) Smeenge, Elizabeth (Jim) Walwood all of Grand Haven; brothers-in-law, Don Currie of Spring Lake; Rodney (Gay) and Sidney Kirby of Virginia; sister-in-law, Patricia Bennett of Holland and many nieces, nephews and numerous friends.
