Donald Gene Hughes

Donald G. Hughes, age 88 of Fruitport passed away Monday, April 17, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family. Don was born March 30, 1929 to the late Euless and Blondale (Rhine) Hughes in Raleigh, IL. He married the former LaDonna Sandage on September 9, 1950 in Harrisburg, IL. Don was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War in the Headquarter’s Financial Division. He began his banking career at Harrisburg National Bank in 1952 and accepted a position as Vice President with Security First Bank & Trust in Grand Haven in 1959. In 1976 he became Vice President of Lumberman’s Bank (First Michigan Bank, now Huntington Bank Shares Inc.), retiring in 1983 at which time he became an Intersecurities-Registered Investment Adviser. Don and his wife LaDonna were the owners of H & H Land Investments, a commercial and residential development. In 1968 they built and owned Williamsburg Court Apartments. After retirement Don and LaDonna enjoyed their winters in Scottsdale, AZ where they enjoyed socializing with many friends and family. Don’s passion was traveling throughout the world with his beloved wife and was inducted as a member in the internationally renowned Circumnavigators Club. Don’s community service included; past president of Harrisburg, IL Chamber, Rotary Clubs of Harrisburg, Grand Haven and Scottsdale, board member and past president for 17 years of Fruitport Community Schools, Muskegon County Board of Education, State of Michigan Education Committee, Muskegon County Library (Fruitport Branch), Muskegon Osteopathic Hospital Board, Coast Guard Festival Board, former chair of Ottawa County United Way, member of Saladin Shrine Temple (Muskegon) and a 32nd degree Mason, Fruitport Business & Professional Association, Fruitport Lions Club, Spring Lake Country Club, U.S. Power Squadron and a member of First Baptist Church of Muskegon. Don will be lovingly remembered by his wife LaDonna; daughters, Debra (Donald) Knapp of Westchester, PA, Rebecca (Charles) Raschke of Grand Haven; son, Gregory (Pamela) Hughes of Brighton, MI; grandchildren, Laura Hughes, Karissa Raschke, Kayla Raschke, Eileen (Kurt) Tintle, Benjamin Knapp. He was preceded in death by his brother Durward Hughes. The funeral service for Don will be 11:00 am Friday, April 21, 2017 at First Baptist Church, 1070 S. Quarterline Road Muskegon with Pastor John Brown officiating. Full Military Rites will be performed by American Legion Post #9 Muskegon. Interment will be in Raleigh Masonic Cemetery in Illinois.
