While surrounded by her family on September 5, 2017, Bernice Ruth Lindquist of Grand Haven passed away at home, at the age of 91. The youngest of four children, Bernice was born on June 1, 1926 in Wallace, Michigan to Emil and Olga (Johnson) Newlin. At the age of 31, she married Carl Theodore Lindquist on October 12, 1957 in Marinette, Wisconsin. Bernice attended nursing school at the Swedish Covenant Hospital School of Nursing and went on to work as a surgical nurse for ten years. While working as a nurse, she attended North Park College and later served as a member of the North Park Alumni Association.

From an early age, Bernice’s faith in Jesus Christ was a central part of her life. After moving with her family to the West Michigan area, she first became an active member of Lakeshore Baptist Church, and then First Baptist Church of Spring Lake. She taught beginner’s Sunday School and also served as an AWANA volunteer and as a member of the mission board. Bernice was also on the board of Child Evangelization Fellowship for many years. In her free time, Bernice enjoyed reading and spending time with her family, including her grandchildren in whose lives she was very active.

Above all else, Bernice’s goal was to serve her Savior. At 91, she was asked what her goals were for the rest of her life. Her answer was, “To glorify God every day of my life for as long as He gives me.”

Bernice is survived by her family: daughter, Ruth (Roger) Joslin; son, Al (Betty) Lindquist; and three grandchildren, Kwade, Journey, and Isabel Joslin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; sister, Dorinne Poikonen; and brothers, Reuben and Roy Newlin. A memorial service for Bernice will begin at 11:00 AM Monday, September 11, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Spring lake with Pastor Doug Bytwerk officiating. Friends may meet the family one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the Grand Haven Township Lakeshore Cemetery.
