William Roper

U.S. Veteran

William G. Roper, age 88 of Grand Haven, passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at a local care facility. Bill was born May 11, 1924 to George and Mary (Komjathy) Roper in Detroit, MI. He married Suzanne Jochen Wilder on December 29, 1956 in Bay City, MI. Bill proudly served his country in the U.S. Naval Air Corps from 1943 through 1945 and following the war earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State University. He lived in Bay City for 21 years where he became V.P. of Engineering for the Thomson Corporation. After moving to Grand Haven in 1973 he was Engineering Manager for Grand Haven Stamped Products until retirement in 1990. Bill was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Grand Haven where he served as Elder. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, gardening and travel. Bill is survived by his loving wife, Sue; daughter, Marty (Fred) Hoewe of Holland, MI; son, David Roper of Flint, MI; sister, Edith (Bryce) Adie of Neenah, WI; nephews, Paul and Thomas Adie; niece, Nancy Chmielewski. Bill was preceded in death by brother, Paul Roper; sister-in-law, Muriel Paquette; brother-in-law, Vincent Paquette. The funeral service for Bill will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 25, 2013 at First Presbyterian Church with The Rev. Dr. Thomas Cook officiating. Full Military Rites will be performed by the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post #28. Interment will be in Lake Forest Cemetery. Friends may greet the family prior to the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be given to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society or First Presbyterian Church.
